In addition to “coaching” the team at Prism Content Solutions, Adam also coaches his local Little League team. This past season, they won the state championship! Here’s the scoop. (Special thanks to our friend LeGette for writing the press release!)
Northwood Little League Sweeps Winners Bracket at Coaches Pitch State Championship
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Northwood “Blue” had the winning touch Sunday, sweeping both of the final games in the Coaches Pitch Little League State Championship in Irmo, South Carolina.
The team scored a 4-3 win in the final inning over Irmo “Green,” the home team in the Coaches Pitch Division, which featured eight champions from both Upper and Lower South Carolina state tournaments. Northwood Blue advanced to the final game after a decisive, 11-1 victory over the Easley All-Star team, who was runner-up in the Upper State divisionals held at Corey Burns Park in Taylors last weekend.
The team was dominant in all aspects of play, going 14-1 over the last three weeks of tournament action. “The strength of this team was our defense,” said Coach Adam Shirley. “We held our opponents to less than three runs per game.”
His analysis is correct: in 15 games, Northwood scored 210 runs and held its opponents to just 41. The team, made up of twelve boys ages 7 and 8, swept the tournament season, claiming the District 7 Championship in Blue Ridge, Upper State in Taylors, and finally the coveted State Championship title in Irmo over the weekend.
Irmo was scoreless until the third when it plated two runs with two outs. They went ahead in the fourth, but Northwood took another step in its title defense as Ben Lumsden, David Mershon, and Blake Shirley anchored a 6-4-3 double play. John Pestrak, Ben Lumsden and Blake London drilled three doubles, and Northwood stayed in the winners with a come-from-behind, one-run victory in the final inning. Blake London hit a walk-off, winning ball that drove Zack Fahr — and the winning run — home.
“The boys were a very coachable group,” says Shirley. “They had a passion for the game, a competitive spirit, and a winning attitude. They played as a team and improved week-to-week. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
On Saturday, April 30, members of the Prism Content Solutions team (aka “The Prismers”) joined over 7000 volunteers across Greenville, S.C., for the community’s annual Hands On Greenville Day. Known colloquially as “HOG Day,” this event was a chance for area residents to participate in the nearly 300 local service projects that took place that date.
The Prismers Team was assigned to spread a fresh batch of cedar chips over a public dog park downtown. Our group of 11 included employees as well as some family members we’d lured over with promises of free food at the after-party. Armed with rakes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows, we set to work spreading the mulch.
More at home in a traditional office environment, most of The Prismers are admittedly unaccustomed to such manual labor. Still, the task was completed with minimal complaining, though there was maximum sweating.
With another successful HOG Day behind us, we look forward to future service projects, and hope the dogs at Cleveland Park enjoy their spruced-up play area.
