Not Just for Teens: Seniors and Social Media

Category: Strategies

Tech-Savvy-SeniorBelieve it or not, Internet users over the age of 50 are fueling the growth of social media. Numbers don’t lie: according to Pew Internet & American Life Project, social media use among Internet users ages 50 and older has nearly doubled – from 22% to 42% over the past year. Half (47%) of Internet users ages 50-64 and 26% of users ages 65 and older are using social media.

What’s more: this age group has 47x the net worth of households headed by those 35 and older, and these days, they don’t just have an email account. Active seniors are searching Google, browsing Facebook newsfeeds and watching YouTube—sometimes from their mobile device. There are currently 39 million people ages 65 and older using Facebook, Twitter and Skype, making them the fastest growing age demographic on these sites.

What are they searching? According to an All Assisted Living Homes 2010 report, senior citizens are turning to Facebook to connect with others. In fact:

  • 40% hope to connect with family and old friends
  • 30% want to share photos
  • 20% play social games; and,
  • 10% enter contests.

But social media is more than just a way to connect with grandkids and look at photos. It’s also a great way to exercise the mind, lift spirits and boost morale. “Social networking websites allow seniors to feel an immediate sense of real connectivity,” James W. McNally, researcher for the National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging, says. “Very much it’s a buffer for depression and isolation.”

Seniors are tapping into technology now more than ever. Connect and engage them with a content marketing platform that includes digital communications and encourages active participation.
